Preview – Millers v Middlesbrough

|

Rotherham United travel to Middlesbrough on Wednesday night hoping to make it two wins on the road.

‘Boro, under former Millers Boss Neil Warnock, have narrowly lost their last two home games with their last win at the Riverside being in mid-December while the Millers last game away saw them beat relegation battlers Derby County.

Both teams were knocked out of the FA Cup, Rotherham taking Premier League side Everton to extra time and ‘Boro losing away at Brentford.

Middlesbrough sit just under the play-off spot in seventh place with the Millers fifteen places below them with games in hand, this being one of those.

The hosts are keeping a close watch on former Miller loanee Dael Fry after a nasty eye injury forced him from the pitch early in their game against Blackburn at the weekend. Marcus Tavernier is a major doubt after having a scan on his knee and while Ashley Fletcher, just back from injury, came on in Sunday’s game he probably won’t be in the starting eleven. Also rated as doubtful is Anfernee Dijksteel.

Manager of Middlesbrough Neil Warnock told the Yorkshire Post that he is expecting a difficult game saying, ‘They (Rotherham) have long throws and free-kicks coming in from all angles scoring most of their goals this way. They are all genuine one hundred per cent players.’

The Millers will be without long term injured trio Chieo Ogbene, Kieran Sadlier and Joe Mattock but Shaun MacDonald has declared himself ready after two-and-a-half months on the sidelines. Signing on loan yesterday from Wolves Ryan Giles could make his debut though it is likely it will be from the bench.

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne spoke to Radio Sheffield before this game saying, ‘Although I feel we’ve been playing really well in the last few games we find ourselves in the worst position we’ve been in all season but we go into this game full of confidence. Middlesbrough are one game away from the play-offs and we know how hard they are going to be to play against and the problems they can cause.’ Going on to talk about ‘the Gaffer’ Neil Warnock, Warney said there wasn’t a lot of his coaching that others can steal and use saying, ‘he’s quite a unique character and they are unique to his personality so you can’t copy him but I do appreciate him taking me under his wing and one of the nicest things he said in his press was that he knew early on that he could trust me which meant a lot.’

Tonight’s Referee is Michael Salisbury from Lancashire.
