Would You Welcome Safe Standing?

Amongst the Championship news this week came the release that Sunderland are going to introduce safe standing at the Stadium of Light by the end of next season.

The Black Cats will change two thousand seats at the Roker End and a thousand in the Upper North stand into safe standing along with the criteria of closed circuit television and advanced steward training which must be adhered too so that they can get the licence. There is also a strict rule of one space, one person’.

They have said that it will be part of a multi-million pound investment and I’m just wondering if this is something we, the fans, would want to see Rotherham United spend that much money on.

Safe standing has been around in British football since the 2022/2023 season with Premier League clubs such as Brentford, Chelsea, Liverpool, both Manchester clubs, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers already having it in place while Birmingham City, Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers are among the Championship clubs who have introduced it.

I do believe that many Millers supporters would welcome safe standing and I could see it working fine in the Kop (The North Stand) but not in the other two home stands if I’m being honest.

And are there other things for Mr Stewart to spend his money on before we contemplate this sort of construction work on the New York Stadium?

We actually had a similar discussion some years ago about this June 2017 to be exact and I’m wondering if people’s views have changed since then?

  • Kevin Williamson says:

Yes in parts of the ground, fans are standing anyway especially away supporters

    • Caz Neale (Herringthorpe) says:

Yes, Kevin, you are right – so I suppose, if it could be done, it might be a good idea but I do feel it would have to be policed (for want of a better word) correctly.

  • Graham Ball says:

I feel this would be a backward step regarding spectator safety. Due to design of the ground.
