Rotherham United Manager Matt Taylor said he expected a ‘little bit of rust’ from his players in the two-nil win at Roundwood against Parkgate last night.

‘It was good to get the boys out on a full sized pitch against opposition who are different from ourselves,’ the Millers Boss told iFollow, ‘but we were really examining how they moved. If they looked mobile, light on their feet and their intent was right which it mostly was.

‘The majority of the players got forty-five minutes and we are looking to progress that as the weeks go on before the first league game.

‘From my point of view the main thing is we get through the whole thing unscathed. (Ed Note – always a plus in my book). A couple of players missed due to precaution and we should have a fully fit squad coming into Monday.

‘It was a game filled with errors unfortunately, for both teams, but we expected that the way the teams were made up. It was a great turn out from the Millers fans, again, and hopefully everyone enjoyed it.’

In his interview Matt alluded to the fact that there were players, particularly in the second half, last night who are coming through the ranks – for some possibly their first interaction alongside first team players – saying ,’it’s always good to see whose next coming through’. And it is. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always seem to work out that way with Rotherham United. Over the years we’ve been hearing of ‘this great player’ coming through who suddenly gets to a stage when he should be joining the first team and suddenly disappears and is never heard of again. I hope this doesn’t happen with some of the lads who played last night, it would be great to be singing ‘he’s one of our own’ to more than just one player in three or four years.
