The Stats – Millers v Bluebirds

Rotherham United finished the season on a high yesterday with a five-two home win against Cardiff City.

But what do the stats tell us?

The Millers, apparently, had just thirty-three per cent of possession at the New York Stadium (really?) won forty-five per cent of all duels while it was evens at fifty per cent for the aerial duels.

Of the ten corners in the game Cardiff won six with our passing accuracy in our opponents half coming out at sixty-four per cent which was thirteen per cent less than our visitors. Our crossing accuracy was thirty-three per cent, fifteen per cent better than City’s.

In attack we had sixteen shots on goal, thirteen of those from inside the box, of which seven were on target while the Bluebirds had five on target from twenty shots.

Defencewise the Millers had a fifty-eight per cent tackle success rate and we made twenty clearances to City’s thirteen. We conceded nine fouls to Cardiff’s six (my eyebrows shot up when I saw this) and the only booking of the game was for Rotherham.

I think we saw more attacking football in the game yesterday than we have in any game all season. There was width, our players got themselves into space and we passed the ball while also fighting to win it back.

Let’s hope we see more of this next season.
