Warne ‘We Need To Be More Ruthless’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne started his post-match interview by thanking the fans for ‘staying with the team’.

Before the game the club had asked us to get there early and help create an atmosphere while they were to play thumping songs to get the place alive. To be fair the ones who usually get there early did and the ones who don’t didn’t. When the team came out we all joined in with the ‘Na na na na’ song (sorry, I really don’t know it’s correct title), we then had to wait for kick-off for a medical emergency at pitch side and we all hope that person is now on the mend. After that I actually thought our fans made some noise but, let’s be honest, it was unmatched by the performance on the pitch.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield after the one-nil home defeat the Millers Boss said, ‘I thought our first half performance was OK and I thought if we were to score the first goal we would go on and win handsomely. But it’s happened too many times recently at home, when we concede one we look really disjointed. And after we conceded we didn’t play well enough to get ourselves back in it.’

And, I think, that has hit the nail on the head. We didn’t play well enough to get back into it because we only seem to be able to play one way and that doesn’t depend on who we have on the pitch or who we fetch off the bench, it just doesn’t differ.

‘We haven’t worked the ‘keeper enough,’ the Boss went on to say. ‘It’s disappointing that we didn’t win because we would have gone back to second. If we win on Tuesday, against a good Pompey side, then we’re cruising. But we weren’t at our best today, whether it’s after the Lord Mayor’s show or whether there is emotional fatigue, though I won’t use that as an excuse, I don’t know. I’m not sure we deserved to lose but I don’t know if we’ve done enough to win.

‘We weren’t great today and we didn’t look a danger from set-pieces while neither of our strikers looked really sharp or that they were going to score. After they scored we looked all over the place and if we want to win games we are going to have to create more chances and we are going to have to look at that. We need to be more ruthless in the final third.’

To be honest, I can’t think that Charlton were good – sorry Addicks – I do think it was us who were poor yesterday. We made mistakes, we were sloppy, we couldn’t string two passes together. And, to be honest, this isn’t the first time I’ve thought that this season.

‘We will come in tomorrow (today) and all watch it together, have another look at it.’ Warney said.

Maybe he should do that with some of the fans and get their feedback and answer their frustrations too.
