Warne ‘I’d Like Us To Play Better’

|

Rotherham United have made it through to the semi-final of the Papa John Trophy after a game that went to penalties against Cambridge United this evening.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield after the penalty win Millers Manager Paul Warne said, ‘We won and we are one game from Wembley but I think we will play better.

‘I thought we were really good first half and, in fairness, the game could have been over and done then and we started quite well in the second half but they (Cambridge) grew into the game. But they are the in-form team in the league so we knew it was going to be tough and they made it tough for us.

‘We were good at set-pieces but we need to take our chances. I made the changes (four in the last twenty-five minutes and then another later in the game) but they didn’t have the affect I wanted.

‘I would like us to play better, I would like us to be more convincing but, as a positive we got game time into some of our players. I’m pleased we got through.’

The Millers Boss had a word for Wes Harding who scored his first goal for Rotherham today saying he’d get him a cake or a book to celebrate (Ed Note – if it’s a book we all need to know which one it is!). ‘He put some really good crosses into the box tonight and I thought he was one of our better players.’

I actually think Warney is being a bit harsh on the players today.  I’ve seen us play a lot worse.  Yes, we had plenty of chances and didn’t score but that’s been happening for at least two seasons.  Yes, we let them into the game – but we didn’t let them score in the final few minutes like we have been known to.

The Millers Boss was asked about the transfer window and said there had been no bids for any of his players and he’s hoping it stays that way. He also said if anyone becomes available that will improve the squad if it’s possible he will fetch them in. He is hoping to find out in the next forty-eight hours if he has done a deal to bring in a permanent signing and/or a loan signing admitting he’s been looking at ‘final third’ players.
