Rotherham United defender Richard Wood was handed the captain’s armband for the EFL Cup game last night and told Radio Sheffield that he was pleased to get ninety minutes under his belt.

Speaking after the two-one defeat to Premier League side Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium, the thirty-two year old said, ‘Apart from the first ten minutes of the second half I thought the lads played well.

‘It was a soft penalty to give away and for the second goal we should have been organised more. But we more than had enough chances to take it to extra time and I would have fancied us as well because we were the dominant side.

‘You want to play against the best players and it was a good battle for me tonight.

‘I think we are very close to turning these performances into wins, we just need to cut out the mistakes.’

Talking about himself, Woody said, ‘It was good to get ninety minutes. I see myself as the experienced one out of the bunch and I just want to be playing and the Gaffer knows that. I’m hoping I’ve put in a good enough performance and laid down a marker going forward.

‘But the competition here is good and the lads at centre-half have done well in previous games but I hope I’ve given the Gaffer food for thought tonight.’

So will Richard Wood get the nod on Saturday against Charlton. I think a lot of us have been saying we need experience at the back and, as Woody himself says, he is the experienced one in the squad. But will Warney pick him and if so who will he drop?

Thoughts anyone?
