Rotherham United’s First Team Coach Matty Hamshaw told IFollow that he’s enjoying his role with the first team.

Originally coming to the New York Stadium as Development Phase Lead Coach for the twelve to sixteen year olds, the now thirty-five year old said, ‘It’s been difficult to take results wise but I’ve really enjoyed it.

‘I’m a local lad and supported Rotherham since being a kid but with Warney, Richie Barker and Breck (John Breckin) having played here the club is close to their hearts. This last season in the Championship has been something we’ve all learned a lot from and I’m sure this season it will benefit us.

‘Putting the identity back into the football club is something the Gaffer, Richie Barker and myself fell strongly about. I think the club had gone away a little bit from what the fans knew it to be.

‘The lads have been fantastic. Their attitude towards training and they’ve all gone up and above what we’ve asked for. It would have been easy for us to disassemble this group if they hadn’t done that, and we would have, but we’ve got a trust in these lads. And we have to make sure anyone we bring in buys into the group mentality here.

‘The success here over the years has been that the lads go out and play ninety minutes and it’s up to us to reignite that back into them. We want that camaraderie because the teams who are successful are the ones who are close knit and would do anything for each other. As staff we have that and we feel that the group we’ve still got here will do that. There are going to be good times and there will be bad times but it’s important that we all stick together as a group.

‘I think last season that the lads did give everything though, at times, I think we lacked that little bit of quality in certain areas in certain games. We’ve still got the majority of that group and we’d have kept the majority of them even if they hadn’t been in contract.

‘It’s a great environment to work in. The Gaffer has pushed for the training ground to be re-done which is going to be another big thing.

‘Like the fans last season it broke our hearts every week and the fact that they stayed behind and clapped us was absolutely fantastic. There are going to be times this coming season again where we need them so if they can make as much noise as previous seasons, get behind us and back us it’s going to be great. Let’s hope we can be successful together.’
