Rotherham United have lost another former player today with sad news that Jimmy Goodfellow has passed away at the age of seventy-six.

Born in Sunderland, Jimmy played for a couple of local sides before joining Port Vale in 1966. Three years later he moved to Workington where he went on to make around two hundred appearances before moving to Millmoor in 1973 under then manager Jim McGuigan and in his second season with the Millers he helped them to promotion to the Third Division. Not a great goal scorer midfielder Jimmy brought a leadership to the team and became captain of Rotherham and rarely missed games playing over two hundred games in a Millers shirt. In 1978 he moved to Stockport County hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

After his playing career ended Jimmy became Assistant Manager at Newport County under Len Ashurst following him to do the same job at Cardiff City. After Ashton left Jimmy became caretaker Manager before being given the job on a permanent basis for the start of the 1984 season. Things didn’t go so well and he was sacked going on to be the physiotherapist with Plymouth Argyle. Two years later he was back at Ninian Park as physio to Cardiff staying there until the end of the 1990’s and was given a testimonial when Manchester United were the opposition with Jimmy himself, at the tender age of fifty-five, playing the final minutes of the game.

All at Vital Rotherham send our condolences to Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time.
