Rotherham United will be playing a Manchester United U21 team in this coming seasons Football League Trophy.

The young Red Devils have been drawn in Group H of the Northern Section of the competition alongside the ‘normal’ teams of Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City and the Millers.

The three games at the start of the Trophy will take place on the weeks commencing 2nd September, 7th October and 11th November.

Last time the Millers were in this competition, that is based around the lower two English leagues with the addition of an U21 side from a ‘bigger’ club, was in the 2017/18 season when they got a one-all home draw against a Manchester City U21 side, but lost on penalties then went on to lose two-one at home to Chesterfield with the only win coming away against Bradford City which end three-nil.

Rotherham United have won this competition when it was under the guise of the Auto Windscreens Shields Trophy. It was the Millers first visit to Wembley (the old one) in April 1996 when two goals from Nigel Jemson saw Rotherham beat Shrewsbury two-one.

Last season saw Portsmouth beat Sunderland in the EFL Trophy final after drawing two-all in extra time and eventually winning five-four on penalties.
