Is That It For Signings?

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne has brought in three players on loan so far this season – Grant Hall, from Middlesbrough, midfielder Scott High from Huddersfield Town and most recently Brooke Norton-Cuffy from Arsenal – and it’s doubtful there will be any more coming in.

‘I’m not close to anything,’ the Millers Boss told Radio Sheffield ahead of the home game against Birmingham City on Saturday. ‘And I don’t foresee anyone else coming in. Any names being connected to us at the moment are not true.

‘If someone comes up that I wasn’t aware of fair enough but I’m not actively speaking to an agent today, or a player or trying to make something happen. There is zero going on in that respect.’

The Millers have been looking for another player upfront since Tom Eaves and Joshua Kayode got injured but both players got minutes in the Carabao Cup loss on Tuesday night – Eaves starting and JJ coming on for the last twenty-five minutes – so perhaps that position isn’t as critical as it was thought. And there was a young ‘keeper at the club presumably on trial but he doesn’t appear to have been kept on. I mean, we have two first class goalkeepers in Josh Vickers and Viktor Johansson but I, for one, would feel happier to have a youngster coming through who could be on the bench if ever needed.

And, I thought we were also looking for a midfielder.

Warney said that he believes the fact that Premier League clubs can now name nine substitutes has probably stopped them loaning as many players out and, I have to admit, that isn’t something I’d thought of but he is probably right.

So it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing any new faces but it is thought that we could be thinking of letting some of our players out on loan which amazes me a bit. I’d rather keep those players in case of injury or suspensions.

Hey, but I’m not a manager so I bow to the ones who know more than me.

Paul Warne did say that he is hoping to get to the end of the transfer window without losing any of his star players – amen to that.
