How Will It All End?

For more than twenty-four hours there have been ‘rumours’ going around that the EFL will tell Leagues One and Two that their season has ended.

If we are being truthful I think we’ve all been expecting this to happen.

But, of course, then comes the question of ‘how will it end’?

Will the 2019/20 season be written off and we’ll start with the same teams in the Leagues as we did in August? If so, does that mean Bury can come back into the league? Not sure about that. And will it mean that Bolton start on an even keel? Well, not sure about that either.

Will we go again next season with the same teams who were there in March when we played the last games? Well, is that fair to the teams who have fought to get to towards the top?

Will there be promotions and relegation? Will the top two go up and the next four find some way of having play-off games? Can’t see that happening as then the season won’t exactly have finished will it? So does that mean the top three in League One, as it stands, will go up and the bottom three go down? Is that fair if teams have games in hand and could have changed that?

It is thought that the EFL are giving the clubs a vote of what they want to happen – well I think it’s quite obvious that the teams in the top three will be voting for it to stay as it is and they go up. And, even if I wasn’t a Rotherham United fan, you can’t blame clubs for voting like that can you.

Already there have been rumbles with Peterborough United Chairman Darragh MacAnthony taking to Twitter to say if this happens then the EFL should ‘prepare for a legal battle of epic proportions’ – and I can understand why he’d say that. And I don’t expect him to be the only one to vent his feelings.

It might not be fair but, as a Millers fan, I’d fully expect my team to say ‘yes’ if asked if they wanted to be promoted after getting to second place in the table. They just couldn’t say ‘no’ could they.

At the moment life isn’t fair. There’s not a lot we can do about it. As regards football I do think that something has to be sorted sooner rather than later and everybody has to take whatever is decided on the chin and move onto next season.

Stay Safe.

Up The Millers.

hi caz i cant see the season finishing thing are going to slow. And the death rate from covid 19 is still very high and i cant see the players wanting to play until it totaly safe i think the powers that be will end it now I dont think clubs taking lagal action will make any difference not with seventy percent of the season goneall that will do is make lawyers better off. Like you caz i think three up three down and no play off games. i dont think it wiii be safe to play for a long time its time to move on fro this season and look forward. keep safe caz from carlton.

I agree with carlton’s sentiments. The clubs that are talking of legal challenges are in my view simply using this as a threat to influence EFL decision. In practice a legal challenge is likely to be an expensive waste. If say the EFL promote Coventry, Rotherham and Wycombe (I’m assuming here that on a points per game analysis Wycombe come third but I haven’t checked) what could a legal challenge by Portsmouth, Peterborough or any other club actually achieve? The courts can’t force clubs to play. The courts can’t say that Rotherham shouldn’t go up but Peterborough should. The only thing that legal action might achieve is to void the season so the top three stay down. What benefit does that bring to Posh or Pompey. I think that when push comes to shove the only legal challenges might be from relegated clubs.

Yes, CinL and Kevin the EFL have to man-up, make the decision and stick to it. I don’t even think they should be giving clubs a vote, if that is indeed what they are doing. As CinL says, the players won’t want to play until it’s proved that it is safe to do so and without masks etc. I’m not sure, either Kevin how the points for games stand – numbers isn’t my thing! Stay safe all.

Caz, excellent discussion just now on Radio 5 Live about European football attempts at restart. Apparently if a player tests positive during the competition it will have to be abandoned. Dresden players tested positive yesterday before the competition resumed so their club misses its first two games. The leagues want players to agree to isolation for the five weeks of the restarted season plus two weeks before. Players say no. Clubs and leagues want players to sign waivers so can’t be sued if they contract coronavirus. Players are asking for legal advice. Club doctors have written to the Prem asking if club doctors will be liable if some players or staff get the virus. No response.
The situation won’t change before a vaccine. There won’t be a next season. If we start in September, October or whenever and, as most experts predict, the virus comes back in Winter the season will have to be suspended. I doubt if a ball will be kicked before Summer 2021.

After yesterday’s announcement (?) by Boris I can’t see anyone doing anything unless they get a bike, Kevin. Forty years ago nobody would have known how to ask about legal advice would they. I’ve seen that three Brighton players have tested positive this weekend. Not sure how the clubs’ doctors are liable to be honest, unless he’s giving them the virus. We don’t seem to be any further on with finding a vaccine do we? I think, as football fans, all we are asking for is a decision – you’re doing this, you’re not doing that and that’s the end of it. None of this we might be or could be. I don’t think they are having the same difficulties in other sports, well not that I’ve seen.
