Good Friday sees Rotherham United travel to Deepdale to take on Preston North End when Staffordshire’s Stephen Martin has the whistle.
This will be the second time Stephen has been in the middle for a Millers game this season the first being in November at Vicarage Road when Watford got a convincing five-nil win. The Millers were already four down when Cafu, who came off the bench on the thirty-third minute, and the only Miller booked, limped off with all the subs being used.
Stephen twice had the whistle for the Millers last season at the New York Stadium the first being in August when Reading were on the end of a four-nil loss, Richard Wood, Conor Washington, Jamie Lindsay and Chieo Ogbene scoring before half-time. He was back in October when Hull City were the visitors with Jacob Greaves opening the scoring for the visitors on forty-four minutes and Dan Barlaser equalising a minute later. City got three more goals in the second half with Georgie Kelly getting a consolation for the Millers in the final minutes of the game giving the Tigers a four-two win.
Before that it was the last game of 2020 that Stephen and the Millers met in our South Yorkshire derby with Barnsley again at the New York Stadium. Goals from Cauley Woodrow and Alex Mowatt gave the visitors a fifteen minute lead with Michael Smith halving the deficit on fifty-seven minutes but it wasn’t enough to get Rotherham anything from the game. Smith, Richard Wood and Jamie Lindsay saw yellow for the hosts that day.
A Tuesday night in October at the City Ground also saw Stephen in charge when a foul on Billy Jones on fifty-one minutes in the area saw Dan Barlaser thump the ball home from the spot to give the visitors the lead. Pressure from Nottingham Forest saw them hit the post, have a terrible miss from former Miller Lewis Grabban and a brilliant save from Jamal Blackman before Sammy Ameobi got an equaliser with ten minutes to go.
Before this Stephen was in the middle for a Millers game at the New York Stadium in April 2019 when, coincidentally, Nottingham Forest were the opponents. Michael Smith gave the hosts the lead on ten minutes but former Miller Lewis Grabban equalised eighteen minutes later. On the hour mark Rotherham went back in front thanks to a Michael Ihiekwe header which gave the Millers their first win over Nottingham Forest since 1956. December 2018, in the same season, was the time before that saw Stephen and the Millers meet at Carrow Road when Richie Towell put the visitors in front on eleven minutes but second half goals from Todd Cantwell, Maximillian Aarons and Teemu Pukki gave the Canaries a three-one win.
The time before that we saw Stephen in charge of a Millers game was in March 2017 when Aston Villa were the visitors to the New York Stadium. Villa won the game two-nil with an own goal from Will Vaulks and a Jonathan Kodjia goal three minutes from time. That season Stephen was also in the middle for our December trip to Craven Cottage. Rotherham went ahead with a Joe Newell goal but Stefan Johanson pulled one back thirteen minutes later for Fulham. On fifty-four minutes Floyd Ayite got a second for the hosts giving them all three points. And also at Elland Road a month later with three second half goals from Kyle Bartley and Chris Wood (2) giving Leeds United the win. Joe Mattock saw yellow that afternoon for the Millers alongside Leeds’s Pontus Jansson.
Steve was in the middle for two games the following season involving the Millers. The first was at Portman Road when a goal a minute from half-time from Leon Best gave the Millers all three points. The following month, April, saw Steve at the New York Stadium when Blackburn were in town. Again just one goal separated the teams this time giving the visitors the three points when Shane Duffy scored on six minutes.
August 2014 also saw Stephen in charge of our Capital One Cup at the Liberty Stadium against Premier League side Swansea City. The game was a one-nil win for the Swans with the goal coming on the twenty-second minute from Bafetimbi Gomis. Kirk Broadfoot, Craig Morgan, Kari Arnason and Richard Brindley saw yellow for the Millers that night.
Stephen had twice been in charge of Millers games before that night – the first being on a Tuesday night and saw us lose our one hundred per cent record at the New York Stadium. Rochdale were the visitors and on the stroke of half-time Dele Adebola put ‘Dale in front with Alex Revell equalising fifteen minutes into the second half. A Daniel Nardiello strike on sixty five minutes gave the home side the lead but when Jason Kennedy went down in the area under a challenge from Revell, Mr Martin pointed to the spot and the resulting penalty was scored by Robert Grant. Four minutes later a curling effort from Kevin McIntyre found the bottom corner of the net to give Rochdale a three-two win.
The only other time Stephen has been in the middle for a Rotherham game was in February 2014 at Brunton Park. Wes Thomas put the Millers in front on twenty-four minutes but a goal just before the break from Lee Millers saw Carlisle draw level. In the final minute of the game the visitors got all three points when Kieran Agard made it two-one to Rotherham. That day yellow cards were shown to Claude Davis and Kari Arnason of the Millers and Courtney Meppen-Walters of Carlisle.
In the eighteen games he has been in charge of this season Stephen has shown ninety-one yellow cards and two red.
Running the line on Friday we have Mark Dwyer and Robert Merchant with Martin Coy the Fourth Official.
