Rotherham United striker Tom Eaves came off the bench on Saturday to score his first league goal for the Millers since he returned in the summer of 2022.

Tom was first with the Millers for a short loan spell from Bolton Wanderers in 2013 where he played in nine games and scored the first goal in the Johnson’s Paint Trophy win away at Hartlepool.

It was a bittersweet moment on Saturday for him really getting his first goal in the league in a Rotherham shirt to make it two-all away at Plymouth only for the hosts to score late on in time added on to win the game three-two.

Speaking to Radio Sheffielld after the game the thirty-one year old said it was a disappointing result saying, ‘I feel for everyone in the changing room because we felt there was always a goal coming and we could have got a result.

‘Everyone worked so hard and we know there’s a tall ask ahead of us but every single person in there is ready to fight. There’s obviously a lot to do but if we can take that performance and attitude into the next games I think we are going to be alright.’

Going on to talk about himself, who, to be fair, hasn’t been given a lot of game time while also having some scathing remarks about him made on social media, Tom said, ‘It’s been an absolutely difficult year in my career bar none. I probably got the worst possible start here getting injured in the first week, then getting injured again when I got back in the team and falling out of favour with the previous manager who had his own ideas which is fine. I’ve not started a game this season and it’s been incredibly difficult to be judged on five minutes here and five minutes there. It’s so difficult and mentally it takes it’s toll. It’s been very tough and I’ve almost felt invisible. I was delighted to get the goal and, in my eyes, my Rotherham career starts now.’

He then sent a message to the Millers fans, ‘We need to stick together. They’ve been great with me even when I’ve not been playing coming up to me saying ‘we really want you to get that goal’ and that means a lot. I could here them sing my name when I came on and I want to repay the fans back for the faith they’ve shown in me and the support they’ve given me.’
