An Answer Next Week?

Football in England is looking like it is set to return next month with the Premier League announcing that the first top tier games are likely to take place on 17th June.

But while the Premier League look like they know what’s happening the rest of us are still in limbo not knowing when – or if – we will see football again.

The EFL held a board meeting yesterday which we presume was about the rules that clubs will have to adhere to in each scenario. Each club is expected to get a vote and it is hoped (though how many times have we said this?) that by next week, possible mid-week, the Championship, Leagues One and Two will know what is happening.

We know that many teams in the Championship are keen on finishing the season and we also know that the League Two sides want the season to end now with just promotion play-off games to take place. It’s just League One and our team Rotherham United who are still on the see-saw not being able to agree at the moment.

We also know that whatever is decided that UEFA have said that the leagues have to be completed by 31st July. How that is going to happen when it’s going to be June when the vote takes place I’m really not sure.

I’m also presuming, though don’t know, if we do end up finishing the season the players who are out of contract (I think that’s four first time players with Rotherham) at the end of June will have that contract extended by a month or so?

I think we can all agree that this is a situation that nobody expected to arise – five months ago we’d never heard of coronavirus or Covid-19 – and it’s an awful predicament to put anybody in. But, I do believe, this has been dragged out until it’s just frustrated everyone – owners, management, players and us, the fans. It’s like everything in life, it’s the not knowing.

Let’s hope, by this time next week, we do know. And whether we agree with the final outcome or not we have to carry on and support our teams from afar.

Stay Safe.

Up The Millers.
