So the first round of games are complete. We`ve already had ups and downs and that was just from a ball smacked my Lampard!
When it all kicked off last Friday, Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 and all the talk was not of a high scoring first game. It was of the ball; the movement in the air was massive and was a major talking point for the pundits during the first day, where Ecuador surprised everyone with 2-0 win over Poland.
All that talk had gone though by Saturday morning. All the coverage was of an English invasion of Frankfurt. 70,000 fans had travelled over to watch the match or just be involved with the world cup atmosphere. For the lucky ones that got their hands on tickets, they were generally disappointed. A fourth minute own goal was all that separated the teams. But who cares? We had 3 points in our first game. As Sweden lined up against World cup new-boys Trinidad and Tobago every expected them to top group B that evening. But one of the first round shocks came from this game in Dortmund, as the Trinidad team held the Swedish team to a 0-0, a massive achievement for them, but a massive disappointment for Sweden. Also that evening in group C Argentina beat a brave Ivory Coast team 2-1.
On Sunday Serbia and Montenegro lined up against Holland, losing 1-0 to an Arjen Robben goal. Sunday also saw Mexico see off Iran 3-1 and Portugal beat Angola 1-0. On Monday the Czech Republic came against the USA, (who are fifth in the world!) an early goal from Jan Koller and two impressive goals from Arsenal`s new signing Rosicky, ensured a 3-0 win for the Czech`s. Later on that day, Italy beat Ghana 2-0.
In group F Australia waited until the last 7 minutes to come to life and put 3 past Japan who had lead for nearly 60 minutes of the game. The day after Brazil scored a cracker from Kaka and beat Croatia 1-0. In the same day group G played there first games which saw Togo take the lead again South Korea only to eventually lose 2-1. Whilst France failed to score in their fourth consecutive world cup finals game, with a stalemate with the Swiss. The final first round of groups games finished with group H, Spain hit 4 past Ukraine whilst Tunisia and Saudi Arabia drew 2-2.
Only 2 surprises for me really with Ecuador beating Poland, and Trinidad and Tobago holding Sweden.
