Rotherham United skipper Richard Wood admitted to being ‘a bit overwhelmed’ after Radio Sheffield caught up with him after yesterday’s win.

After nine years with the Millers Woody hasn’t played as much football as he probably wanted this season but he’s been there for the last five games when he’s been needed.

‘I’m just trying to take it all in,’ he said. ‘I’ve been relegated, stayed up, promotions and you’ve just got to enjoy moments with my family on the pitch. It’s just a great day and I got a lovely reception off the fans and I loved it.

‘After Christmas I didn’t think we’d be involved again. I’ve just stayed professional, worked hard and waited for my chance and luckily I got that and I’ve been able to get back on the pitch and help lead the lads and keep us up.

‘We’ve had numerous chances (to keep the club in the Championship) over the last few weeks but we’ve dug in today and it’s been the best team effort from everybody. With the injuries we’ve picked up those lads have put their bodies on the line and I think it’s richly deserved.

‘But we’ve finally done it and ‘thank you’ to the fans. The support we’ve had through the season has been excellent. I hope this is the start of this club staying in the Championship and maintaining it.

‘I’ve loved every minute here, I’ve had a lot of lows, don’t get me wrong, but my highs far override them. I’ve had some unbelievable moments, today being one of them and I just want to enjoy it.’
