The Stats – Millers v Tractor Boys

|

Rotherham United lost out to a seven goal thriller at Portman Road last night against Ipswich Town – but what about those stats?

The Millers had fifty-three per cent of possession last night and were better, overall, in the duels although Town won the ones in the air with fifty-four per cent.

There were eight corners in the game with Rotherham winning six of those with our passing accuracy in our opponents half coming out at fifty-nine per cent, seven per cent better than our hosts.

In attack we had thirteen shots at goal, nine of those from inside the box, with five shots on target. Ipswich had seven shots on target from eleven.

Defence wise our tackle success rate came out at sixty-per cent, Town’s being thirteen per cent better with both sides conceding sixteen fouls. There were three yellow cards in the game, two of those going to Rotherham.

It all started so well with a Tom Eaves second minute goal and we looked on top for ten minutes or so – or maybe Ipswich looked shell-shocked. But Town came back into the game and got stronger scoring twice before half-time with it looking like it would be ‘gloom and doom’ around the message boards again. But, I thought we were excellent in that second half. Of course, we made mistakes, but so did our opponents. We fought for the ball, we went forward and Hakeem Odoffin got us back into the game with a sixtieth minute goal and from then on it was more or less one way traffic. PK hit the post, Wyke volleyed wide, Nombe brought off a save from their ‘keeper and then PK won us one of those rare-spotted set-pieces, a penalty. Cafu, who had only been on the pitch eight minutes, took charge. He waited until things had calmed down, put the ball on the spot and those of us who hadn’t got our eyes shut, saw him score a Panenka penalty. Three-three, we’d got an away point. But – of course it’s never that simple with the Millers – and whether we tuned out I don’t know but the hosts went up the other end and scored. Of course, a point might not have done us any good but it would have been nice to find out. And I think we truly deserved something from that game last night.

We’ve just got to go again on Saturday away at Queens Park Rangers.
