Ten Years On

Rotherham United’s New York Stadium is ten years old.

Long gone are the days of our traditional ground at Millmoor (still the ‘spiritual home’ of many Millers) and long forgotten are our days camped out at the Don Valley Stadium.

We opened the New York Stadium with a South Yorkshire friendly when Barnsley came to play – and almost spoiled the party when Jacob Melis became the first player to score there. But the Millers came back just a minute later when David Noble slotted the ball home and not long after Kayode Odejayi made it two-one. A first game and a first win at the new stadium.

The first league game was also a win – on 18th August 2012 – when a penalty from Daniel Nardiello and further goals from Odejayi and Ben Pringle saw Rotherham see off Bury three-nil.

A lot has happened since then. Back-to-back promotions in our first two seasons saw us in the Championship. Managers have come and gone, players have come and gone. We’ve seen penalty shoot-outs we’ve seen thrilling draws, we’ve seen equally thrilling goals. There’s been promotions and relegations – there’s been thrills and spills, excitement and heartache.

And this last few weeks our great stadium has been host to the Women’s European Championship – and how proud have we been to see ROTHERHAM and our ground displayed on our TV screens.

For the tenth year anniversary the Millers have brought out a commemorative primary strip – still, of course, in our usual red and white but with pictures of the stadium embossed within the shirt. And our tenth year starts with Rotherham back in the Championship.

Start spreading the news …. Happy Birthday, New York Stadium.

Up The Millers!
