So, How Are We Doing?

Like the rest of the top two divisions, Rotherham United, who are back in the Championship for the third time in six seasons, are in the middle of an international break.

Obviously things are very different this season. Due to the coronavirus the season began in September instead of August and the games are taking place in empty stadiums which is something we’ve never seen before in league football.

But just how are we doing compared to the last twice we were in the second tier of English football?

Going into this break we are twelfth in the table, having won one, drawn two and lost one, with five points. Two years ago after four games the Millers had moved down the table having just lost three-two at home to Hull City on three points having let nine goals in. The first four games of the 2016/17 season after having had eight goals scored against them Rotherham got their first win of the season in a one-nil home victory over Brentford but were in the last of the relegation places with Preston and Blackburn below them.

This season Rotherham have let in just three goals, one of those a last minute penalty and one a goal in time added on. But, it is better, at this stage of the proceedings, that it has been in the two before.

As I said we are half-way in the Championship Table and perhaps shots being placed better on goal, not switching off in the final minutes of a game, could have seen us higher up, could have seen us in nose bleed territory of the top six. Now, that would have been something to see, something to make people sit up and take notice. On the other hand you could say we could have been lower because, let’s be honest, had Huddersfield played better on Saturday they could have (probably should have) seen us off by the hour mark.

But, saying all that and looking at the wider picture, we are doing better than we have in previous years in this division. We are going toe-to-toe with other teams. So, at this present time, I think we are doing OK, even better than OK. Yes, there are things we could do better, there are problems to sort out but I don’t think we will be the only fans to think that about their team.

So the answer to ‘how are we doing’ there’s a long way to go in the season but sitting twelfth in The Championship – blimey, I’d take that any day.

Up The Millers.
