Sin Bins To Be Introduced?

Rotherham United – as other English football teams – might have to find room to build ‘sin bins’ for the start of next season.

An article in The Times that there are plans afoot to trial sin-bins in FA Cup games.

It is thought that the rule will state ‘you could be sent to the sin-bin for a cynical foul or for arguing with a referee’ when the punishment isn’t quite a red card offence but would probably be more than a yellow card offence.

There have already been trials in youth games in both England and Wales and FIFA referees’ chief Pierluigi Collina seems to back the idea of using the sin-bin method of punishment while FA chief Mark Bullingham has also said that they are looking favourably at the idea.

Seven years ago Vital spoke about discussions going on about yellow card sin-bins while some fifteen years ago there were talks about their use which never came to fruition.

Sin-bins aren’t new in sport with Ice Hockey and Rugby having used them for some years and seem to work well. Would they work in football?

Of course, there has to be some thought on who would ‘police’ these areas and where they would be, how long the punishment would last for each offence – but I’m quite sure it could be done.

What about you – do you see sin-bins appearing at our grounds next season? Would you welcome them? Or would it be better for the referee to carry a third card – yellow for booking, red for sending off and perhaps a silver for ‘watch it’?

Tell us what you think.

Leave the game alone , already a shambles with VAR , and the indecision over the off side rule . The change’s haven’t improved the game . Go back to the old system, bring the enjoyment back into the game for players and supporters.

I think it’s too late to go back to the old system, Shaun, but I agree, the ‘powers who be’ are just making the game more complicated with every new (daft) rule they introduce.
