Rumours, Rumours, Rumours Again

With games still going on in the top league of English football and play-offs around the half-way stage there are still rumours in the wind, a couple involving our own Rotherham United.

One of those rumours are saying that the Millers are thought to be interested in defender Will Boyle. The tall centre-back came through the Youth ranks with Huddersfield Town and while with the Terriers had loan spells with Kidderminster Harriers, York City and Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock. January 2017 saw Will sign for League One side Cheltenham Town who he has made one hundred and forty appearances for and helping out with twenty goals, his highest season tally being seven this past season helping them to promotion from League Two as champions.

There are also vague rumours that we are keeping an eye on Glasgow born centre-back Liam Lindsay who ended the season on loan with Preston North End and not the first time his name has been linked with Rotherham. Liam’s career began with Partick Thistle who he had a couple of first team games for while also having loan spells with Alloa Athletic and Airdrieonians. He went on to play another sixty-nine times for the Scottish Premiership side Partick before he moved South of the Border to Millers’ neighbours Barnsley in June 2017. Two season’s at Oakwell saw the Tykes cash in on him getting a reported £2,000,000 when he moved to Stoke City. Liam went out on Loan during the January window to Deepdale where he made his Preston debut against the Millers in our two-one away win. He played thirteen times for Preston scoring a couple of goals and I would think it’s likely they will get first option on keeping him for next season.

It’s more than probable that these are just rumours but it’s interesting that both these players are centre-backs when I’d like to think we are looking at fetching in a left-back which, I feel, a few of us think was sadly missing last season.

I wouldn’t say a left back is Rotherham United’s priority by any means.

I know, Paul, that we need to score goals and should we keep the strikers we have – which I can’t really see us doing – then we’d be OK in League One. But we only really have Joe Mattock as a left-back and he’s been missing for a big chunk of the season so we’ve been playing players out of position in that role. That’s why I feel we need a left-back.
