Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne said it was like ‘men against boys’ after the Millers disappointing five-nil defeat at Cardiff on Saturday.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield Warney said, ‘I’m hugely embarrassed to have to speak to the press after losing five-nil

I’ve no regrets with the team I put out, which I thought was the best with the small squad I had available but I thought some of the lads let themselves down today at at times I thought it was men against boys.

‘Cardiff were significantly better than us and they are in good form. They had a lot more quality throughout the team, a lot more pace and power and we couldn’t deal with that. After playing well in midweek to come here and take such a drumming is probably a wake-up for some of the lads but if they want to play at this level they need to up their game.

‘I thought the first half was pretty dour and they scored a goal with probably their first shot and target although they probably could have scored another straight after but Rich (Richard O’Donnell) made a great save.

‘I’m not blaming Ben (Purrington) for the second goal. He’s jumped up two leagues and is just a nineteen year old kid and unfortunately for him he made the wrong decision at the wrong time. We have to try and pick him up now.

‘I told the lads to go out for the second half and really have a go but to conceded so early on it was more about damage limitation. For the last fifteen minutes Joe Newell couldn’t move but I’d made my three subs so we were virtually down to ten men.

‘No-one goes out to play bad but collectively but I don’t think many of them manned up today. I have to think that they didn’t play at their best and lost five-nil because it would be difficult and depressing for me to think they played their best and lost five-nil.

‘It’s a four hour drive for the Rotherham fans and I was embarrassed when I walked over and clapped them and I appreciate their efforts. They didn’t get much for their money today.

‘Now I’ve got to pick them up and I think I can do that. We are a little squad but next week I’ve got players coming back including hopefully Frecks (Lee Frecklington) and Morris from Norwich so I can add possibly five better players than I’ve had today. We did perform well in mid-week but probably this was just a step too far.’
