A bit of history between Stanley and the Millers
Rotherham United travel to the Fraser Eagle Stadium tomorrow evening to take on Accrington Stanley for this re-arranged game.
Accrington FC was one of the former members of the Football League, the club being formed after meeting at a local pub in 1876 and originally played at Accrington Cricket Club’s ground in Thorneyholme Road.
The club was part of the revolt against the Football Association in 1884 over professionalism, after they had been expelled from the FA the previous year for paying a player. They joined the Football League in April 1888 as one of the original twelve teams.
Accrington FC finally folded in 1896 and didn’t reform until 1921 when local rivals, Accrington Stanley, who were originally known as Stanley Villa, joined them.
After trying to keep themselves afloat, the best Stanley ever did was in 1954/55 and 1957/58 when they finished second in the Third Division, but, as only the top club went up they never got to move into the Second Division. On 11 March 1962, after the club failed to pay the Inland Revenue, the Football League accepted Stanley’s resignation from the League.
Accrington Stanley began life in the league again at the start of the 2006/7 season, where they finished twentieth in League Two.
The Millers met Accrington in August for the first game of the season at Don Valley and, with it looking like it was going to be a stalemate, up popped Paul Warne in the final minute of the game to give the Millers all three points.
