How Can You Pick A Man Of The Match

Rotherham United beat Shrewsbury Town at Wembley on Sunday in the League One Play-Off Final and Millers skipper Richard Wood was voted the Man of the Match at the Stadium.

Now I know that I’m a Miller through and through and probably biased but I really can’t pick a Man of the Match from the game except to say he was from Rotherham.

Goalkeeper Marek Rodak might not have had that much to do but when he did he was able and competent and did what was necessary.

I thought Josh Emmanuel had yet another excellent game and can’t fault Joe Mattock at right and left back.

Semi Ajayi came back into the side at the back and had a ‘clean’ game while we didn’t see Will Vaulks famous back-flip goal celebration, he had a couple of shots from distance and his long throws caused problems in the Shrews box.

What can we say about Woody that hasn’t been already said. And, if it is true that he played with a broken toe for most of the game then he really does wear a magic hat.

I was pleased that Warney started with Jon Taylor because it was as though he’d been wound up and once let go ran his blood to water down the wing, getting balls into the box with his ‘partner’ Richie Towell who also did his job at both ends of the pitch.

A lot had been made of Joe Newell before the game and he didn’t let anyone down dashing down the wing, in the middle and being around the box.

Our two front men also had good games. David Ball might have missed that early penalty but his head didn’t drop and he buzzed around the box all the time he was on the pitch. Michael Smith was also in and around the box all game with two defenders around him all the time.

And our subs Caolan Lavery, Ryan Williams and Anthony Forde all played their part. Lavery might have had a goal with a bit more fortune and when the lively Taylor went off the just as lively but fresher Williams came on while Forde did what he had to for the ten minutes he was on.

So, as I asked earlier, how can you pick a Man of the Match?

Could you do it?
