Head to Head

Head-to-Head – Millers v Toffees

|

Rotherham United travel to Goodison Park on Saturday to take on Everton for the first time in an FA Cup game.

The Millers and Toffees have met in previous cup and league games the last time being in August 2018 in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup again at Goodison Park. Rotherham held their own until the twenty-eighth minute when Gylfi Sigurdsson scored for the hosts. Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it two-nil just after the hour mark with Will Vaulks pulling one back for the visitors a few minutes later. But three minutes from time Calvert-Lewin got his second and Everton’s third to send them through to the third round.

The teams have also met in this competition under different guises in two two-legged games Everton winning three of the four games, the other being a goalless draw.

There has also been six League games between the pair in the Old League Two – the Millers winning once, the Toffees winning two games and the others being draws.

Everton and Rotherham have met in the so-called One-to-One Cup so named as both sides were then sponsored by One-to-One. The game was at a very hot Millmoor in July 1999 which was decided by a mix up between Mike Pollitt and his defence to allow Kevin Campbell an easy header on sixty-seven minutes for his first goal for the Toffees. Referee Scott Mathieson showed just one yellow card which was to Richard Dunne of Everton who was taken off around ten minutes later at the suggestion of the official after a nasty tackle on Chris Sedgwick. This was supposed to be a regular pre-season fixture but was only ever played this once, so I suppose Everton still hold the cup!

Last season Rotherham got through to the Third Round of the FA Cup after beating non-league sides Maidenhead and Solihull Moors losing three-two to Hull City in round three. Everton’s only FA Cup game last season was in the Third Round when they were beaten by neighbours Liverpool at Anfield one-nil. They have won the FA Cup five times – 1906, 1933, 1966, 1984 and the last time being in 1995.
