Rotherham United welcome Southampton to the New York Stadium for their first league visit to the New York Stadium.
The last time the pair met in the league, in Rotherham, was at Millmoor in September 1965 in a Division Two game. Bobby Williams gave the Millers the win with the only goal of the game.
April the season before also saw the Saints on Rotherham soil which was a three-one win for the visitors. Albert Bennett scored the Millers goal while George O’Brien and Martin Chivers (2) got the visitors goals.
There were six goals in a game between the two in November 1961. Alan Kirkman scored two for the Millers that day with one each from Ken Houghton and Barry Webster with the Saints goals coming from George O’Brien and Derek Reeves.
The teams have played out two league draws at Millmoor one being the first time they met in 1923 which was goalless and the other in September 1952 when goals from Jack Grainger and Len White for the home side while the Saints’ goals came from Jack McDonald and Charlie Purves.
The game in October at St Mary’s Stadium saw Southampton take a two minute lead from a Stuart Armstrong goal and without Viktor Johansson in the Millers’ goal they could have been ‘out of sight’ by half-time. But, with the Viking keeping us in the game at one end Jordan Hugill won a point for Rotherham on the seventy-eighth minute at the other.
