Rotherham United’s next opponents at the New York Stadium are Wigan Athletic.

Wigan were last on Rotherham soil in February 2019 in a Championship game which saw two goals in four first-half minutes to give each side a point apiece.  A goal on twenty-eight minutes from Clark Robertson gave the hosts a deserved lead with Josh Windass equalising four minutes later.  Earlier that season the Millers were three-one winners at home against Wigan in an EFL Cup game.

A game between the two in November was a win for the visitors who moved up to top of League One with the three points.  The Latics took a fourteen minute lead thanks to a Will Grigg goal but the hosts equalised with a curling effort from David Ball.  On twenty-eight minutes Alex Bruce put Wigan back in front and a Michael Jacobs goal on the hour mark gave them a three-one win.

The Millers didn’t get many wins during the 2016/17 season but Boxing Day 2016 was one of those rare occasions. Going into half-time Rotherham found themselves three up with goals from Aimen Belaid, Danny Ward and a Dan Burn own goal. Yanic Wildschut pulled one back on fifty-one minutes and when a second Wigan goal from Jordi Gomez went in on seventy-nine minutes it made the last ten minutes of the game a little uncomfortable for the Millers fans!

In March the season before two goals from Jermaine Pennant in five first-half minutes saw the visitors two-up in thirty-six minutes. Matt Derbyshire pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time but Wigan managed to hold onto their lead to get all three points. Kirk Broadfoot of the Millers and Wigan’s James McClean were booked on the day.

When the two met at Millmoor last it was in the Championship in January 2005. A goal on seventy minutes from Gary Teale gave the visitors the lead with a Jason Roberts goal on the stroke of full-time doubling the score and giving all three points to Wigan.

September 1990  saw Rotherham beat Wigan at Millmoor in the Old Division Three. The score was five-one with Stewart Evans getting two of the goals that afternoon and Des Hazel and Clive Mendonca also scoring plus an own goal.

The first time the teams met in Rotherham was at Millmoor in May 1984 which was a four-one win for the Millers with two goals from Tony Simmons and one each from Alan Birch and John Dungworth which was in the Old Division Three league.

At the DW Stadium in August the only goal of the game came deep into stoppage time after a Max Power free-kick found Will Keane who put the ball in the net to give the hosts the win.
