Rotherham United travel North to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland for their next away game.
The Millers were last here on a Tuesday September 2019 when a goal in the first minute from Mark McNulty gave the hosts the lead. It might have been worse after Clark Robertson brought Lynden Gooch down in the penalty area but a poor shot from Aiden McGeady was easily saved by Daniel Iversen. With twenty-four minutes left Freddie Ladapo made the best of some defensive hesitation, winning the ball and threading it through to Jake Hastie who found the roof of the net to give the Millers an equaliser.
A Championship game in February 2005 at the Stadium of Light is one that Rotherham’s goalkeeper, Mike Pollitt, will probably want to forget. Dean Whitehead and Sean Thornton gave the hosts a two-nil lead going into half-time with Gary Breen making it three-nil four minutes into the second half. Thornton made it four in the last fifteen minutes with Andy Monkhouse getting a consolation goal to make it four-one to the Black Cats.
The first time the pair met at the Stadium of Light was in October 2003 in Division One with the game ending goalless.
The only other points the Millers have got on Sunderland soil was at Roker Park, both of which were one-one draws. April 1959, which was the first time the two had met at Roker Park, saw Alan Kirkman get the Rotherham goal with George Darwin getting the visitors goal in October 1960, both times in Division Two.
The game at the New York Stadium earlier this season saw Michael Smith and Freddie Ladapo net a pair of goals each with another from Michael Ihiekwe while Ross Stewart scored for the visitors. A late lunge on Wes Harding from Aiden McGeady saw the Republic of Ireland international get a second yellow on the fifty-sixth minute. Rotherham won the game five-one.
