Rotherham United and Accrington Stanley have met fifty-four times in the League before with the Millers having won twenty-nine of those to Stanley’s sixteen.
This will be just Accrington’s second visit to the New York Stadium, the first being in December 2012 in a game which saw five goals. The Millers went in front on the quarter of an hour mark with an own goal from Tom Eckersley with Craig Lindfield equalising five minutes before the break for Stanley. Two second half goals from substitute Daniel Nardiello plus one from Michael O’Connor gave the hosts a four-one win.
The last time the two met at Millmoor was on 1st March 2008 when the only goal of the game came from Stanley’s Ian Craney on sixty-four minutes which left then Manager, Mark Robins, livid. Robins said he was ’embarrassed’ and it was the ‘worst second half performance I’ve witnessed for a long, long time.’
Although the Millers beat Accrington three times at Don Valley the last time they beat them at Millmoor, was in February 1951 when the scoreline read Rotherham 6 Accrington 2. Jack Shaw got a hat-trick that day while Jack Grainger got two and Nobby Noble got one. There were over fourteen and a half thousand at Millmoor that day.
