Rotherham United Assistant Manger Richie Barker said that it was ‘massively’ important that the Millers went into the upcoming international break with a win.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield after the two-nil away win at Bristol City, Richie, standing in for the self-isolating Paul Warne said, ‘to come away, win and keep a clean sheet is excellent.

‘Clean sheets are important because it means you are going to come away with something and it also breeds confidence, not just for the back three and goalkeeper but for the whole team.

The Millers scored a goal in each half, the first a header from Michael Smith at the end of the first and then another header which we are giving to skipper Richard Wood, although it could have come off the head of a City defender, in the second half.

‘They (City) are a very good team,’ Barker said, ‘and so it was more about being organised and making sure we didn’t get hit on the counter, which is a major strength of theirs.

‘It’s been an unbelievable difficult two weeks with a massive amount of illness and bear in mind we only had a day and a half to work on this game I thought the lads were excellent.’

I actually thought today was a good performance for the whole team. Nobody seemed to be lacking which I thought they would be given the previous weeks without training. Yes, we did lose the ball a bit in midfield but we also won the ball there too. We defended from the front and when it was ‘backs to the wall’ we did it without even thinking about it. I don’t think there was a lot of desperate defending, though there were some last minute challenges, but those went well too. And, yes, I was pleased when we got the second goal and I could breath a little easier. To be honest I don’t think Bristol City had an answer to us.

A break now and then into probably the busiest April the club has seen.
