Things Can Only Get Better

|

Covid 1 Rotherham United 0

Well, yesterday started out with promise – Christmas presents wrapped and in family bags ready to leave on doorsteps, bags packed ready for us to set-off and Christmas Eve to go visiting for a couple of days, and the Millers v Rams match to look forward to watching via the EFL Digital but by 4.15pm all those plans were in tatters.

I went on the laptop to pay my £10 for the game only to see the statement that the game was off because a Rotherham player had tested positive for Covid19 and others were showing symptoms. Disappointing but couldn’t be helped and let’s hope the players involved are all soon fit and well. Then I was watching Sky Sports (other Sports programmes are available) and Jeff Stelling told me that Boris had stopped me going anywhere at Christmas.

How plans change in two hours.

Apparently it was quite a late call for the game to be postponed, though I suspect, but don’t know, it’s because the player tested positive when he arrived at the ground? With not having a game the Millers dropped to twenty-first while Derby dropped into the relegation zone.

If the players involved have to isolate for ten days then I’m guessing, but again don’t know for sure, that our Boxing Day trip to Middlesbrough is now in doubt and, if it’s a ten day isolation and more players contract the virus that makes it midnight on the 29th December (I think) and that would put our South Yorkshire derby with Barnsley at risk too wouldn’t it? I’m just thinking this because Newcastle’s game against Villa was postponed on 1 December (the game should have been played a few days later) with their next game being on the 12th.

What I am wondering is if we can’t travel from A to B to stop the infection of Covid19 then should live sport be going ahead at all? I ask that question with a heavy heart as I love watching football even on TV but, let’s be honest here, although the teams are socially distanced off the pitch they aren’t on the pitch are they. (And don’t get me started on ‘social distancing’ in supermarkets).

I’ll be honest, I can’t see us getting to see live football round here for some time.

So, a bad news day yesterday – things, they say, can only get better. Let’s hope they do.

Stay Safe.

Up The Millers.
