Rotherham United defender Richard Wood told Radio Sheffield that it was ‘very pleasing’ to get off the mark this afternoon.

After having a similar goal chalked off at Blackburn a couple of weeks ago, the Millers stand-in skipper, Wood, was mobbed by his players on fifty-seven minutes when he scored a header from a corner to give the Millers the lead – and eventually all three points – away at Rochdale this afternoon.

‘A goal and a clean sheet, you can’t ask for much more,’ the thirty-two year old said after today’s away win.

‘I’m hopefully a steady influence over everyone else. We’ve had some good performances, a couple of hiccups, but, in the main, it’s been good and we’re in good shape at the moment.’

Saying he found the beginning of the season frustrating when he couldn’t get into the team, Woody said, ‘I believe I should be playing every week, and that’s how every football should think, but I’ve had to be patient and now I’m in the team I’ve got to keep performing because there’s good competition.

‘And I want to get a few more goals. We look strong from set-pieces, me Kieffer (Moore) and Mike (Ihiekwe) are causing a lot of problems for teams. We look dangerous and are big strong lads who all want to attack the ball. It’s paying dividends because we’ve scored a few now from set-pieces.

‘We’ve got to build on this now. Our home form’s been excellent and we know we’ve had to turn our away form around and coming to a difficult place like this shows the character we’ve got in the squad and we need to push on.

‘We took a lot of knocks today. I’ve took a few bangs on my knees, although the lads will be saying that’s old age! But we all got up and got on with it.

‘I thought OD (Richard O’Donnell) has come in today and made a couple of good saves and he’s a good influence behind us. We’ve had Marek (Rodak) in the nets for the past few weeks and Richard has come in today and not let himself down, he’s been excellent.

‘I think we are more than capable of being up there. We need to keep playing like this, grinding out away victories and who knows what can happen.’
