RUFC – Warney Disappointed That Millers Got Nothing

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne said he was ‘hugely deflated’ after losing today’s game in time added on.

Speaking after top of the table Shrewsbury Town got the late winner to make it two-one to them, Warney told Radio Sheffield, ‘I thought my team gave me everything they had against a very good Shrewsbury team.

‘After having more attempts at goal, more possession, more corners I thought we’d done enough to at least come away with a point. At one-all it was a good game and probably flattered them (Shrewsbury) a little bit so to lose like we did I don’t think my players deserved that.

‘If Kieffer’s (Moore) penalty had gone in, and I’m not criticising him, then the game takes a different course. Their first attempt at goal went in and the place is a little bit edgy. I told them at half-time that we are a better team than them and that we needed to show a bit more composure on the ball. When we equalised I thought we would go on and win it.

‘I’m very disappointed that from a corner we had in the ninety-third minute, when it was one-all, the lad moves his arm to the ball which should have been a penalty to us but the ref, who was three yards away, didn’t see it. They go up the other end and to concede like that is hugely disappointing.

‘We were on the other end last week getting a last minute goal and feeling pleased with ourselves but this week we leave the stadium feeling pretty low.’

Asked about the sending off of Shrews captain Abu Ogogo for a challenge on Shaun Cummings, Warney honestly said, ‘It just looked like a tackle to me. Whether the player went in two footed, ugly, over the top, I didn’t see it.

‘I don’t know if that helped us or not. The ten men were really resilient and it took a good goal from Richie Towell to get us back in the game.

‘We put a lot into the box but I thought they defended really well and their ‘keeper was pretty outstanding.

‘I’ll take the positive that we went toe-to-toe with the best team in the league and deserved to get something out of the game. There were some good performances although a couple of the lads didn’t play to their absolute maximum but for ninety plus minutes they did what I asked and limited Shrewsbury to very few chances.’
