Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne said that it is a ‘sad day’ after the Millers relegation was finally sealed this afternoon at the New York Stadium.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield after the one-nil defeat by Fulham, Warney said, ‘I thought we created enough chances in the game to win. I thought we had as many chances as they did, if not better chances. Unfortunately, we didn’t take them.

‘The lads are licking their wounds in there. They know they’re relegated now and it’s a sad day for the players, the staff and everyone at the club.

‘Prior to this game I knew we were down not that I’d ever let that out to the lads. We’ve won very few games this season in a very tough league so for us to go and win eight on the spin was as likely as my hair growing back.

‘It’s sad to have the relegation and I’m obviously the Manager who took them down so it’s not great for my ego or self esteem.

‘But I was proud in parts of how the lads played today. I could see they were a bit nervy on the ball and I could sense that in the crowd and I kept trying to keep them going as best I could.

‘Then to concede the goal well it was like pinball wizard. Even if we could have got a one-all it would have been good for the fans to enjoy us scoring a goal so that’s disappointing.’

In a message to the fans after today Warney said, ‘Everyone who works at this club, loves it and breathes it. No-one takes this defeat worse than me. We do appreciate your support and we want to do something in the next few games to give you something to go home and cheer about. Generally speaking the fans have been good and appreciate the work we are trying to do and I apologise that the season has been disappointing. Please stay with us. It’s a great club. You are only a good fan if you go through the good times and the bad times and, with a good summer, I hope you can watch us being competitive next season.’
