Rotherham United Manager, Ronnie Moore, like his predecessor, Mark Robins, says that a lot of footballers foot injuries are caused by the ‘flimsy’ boots they wear.

Speaking to The Advertiser, Moore said, ‘Metatarsal injuries have become that commen that it’s got to be due to the boots the players wear these days. They are so light, I don’t think they give any protection.

‘When I played we wore good, solid boots that had six studs and I don’t ever remember a metatarsal injury. They have blades on the boots now that go different ways.’

At Rotherham, Moore has seen Tom Pope, Dale Tonge and Ryan Taylor on the injury table for long periods with broken bones or metatarsal injuries and Moore said, ‘In the case of Ryan it was a simple shoulder charge in training and he went over on his right foot and that was it.

‘I don’t know the answer but something has to be done. But I don’t suppose any one will take any notice of us. It will take one of the big clubs to say something before it’s taken seriously.

‘It’s all about fashion now, I mean, years ago, when would you have seen a centre-half wearing white boots?! Bobby Moore never wore them. I know Alan Ball was the first to wear white boots but he was a good player.

‘I can spout all day about this problem but I wish someone would do something or we are going to see a lot more of these kinds of injuries.’

I can see where Ronnie Moore is coming from – the boots they wear nowadays are like slippers. But, to be fair to the players, that’s what they’ve been taught to play football in – and that’s all you ever see sold in the shops. Saying that, I do think the ‘old fashioned’ boot was much better.
