Rotherham United take on Southampton this evening in the Carling Cup and Millers manager, Mark Robins thinks that the Saints play refreshing football.

Retired Dutch defender, Jan Poortvliet, took over as manager at Southampton in May this year after a bit of huffing and puffing as, at the time, he was still employed by Club Helmond Sport. In the end, Poortvliet paid his former club compensation and so eventually took over the club in August. Poortvleit tends to play the ‘Dutch’ system of 4-2-2-1-1 and Mark Robins says he likes this philosophy, ‘it’s fantastic and refreshing.’

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, the Millers manager says, ‘They are a young side with no fear and Jan Poortvliet has a few options at his disposal. I hope he is given the chance to build this team until it matures because if he does get that opportunity, in the not too distant future, he will have a really good team on his hands.’

Poortvliet has experience among the young with the likes of Stern John and Chris Perry who could both get the nod this evening. Also doing well at the moment are young strikers Adam Lallana and Bradley Wright-Phillips.
