Rotherham United took their third Championship scalp in the Carling Cup this evening when they beat Southampton by three goals to one.

Goals from Nick Fenton, Drewe Broughton and a screamer of a goal from Danny Harrison saw off the Saints who were second best all night.

The home side came out much the brighter and Ian Sharps got on the end of an Alex Rhodes corner but drilled his shot just wide of the post followed just afterwards by another Rhodes corner, which once again Sharps got to but put his shot across the goal. On the twentieth minute, Nick Fenton put the ball over the line before Drewe Broughton made sure by putting it over again. Andy Warrington in the Millers goal was a spectator for much of the first half and didn’t have a shot to save.

The second half started with the Millers attack causing the Saints lots of problems and it wasn’t a surprise when the Millers doubled their lead on the fifty-sixth minute when Danny Harrison got the ball twenty yards out and unleased an unstoppable shot that flew past Bartosz Bialkowski in the visitors goal. The Saints then got a lifeline from substitute Stern John whose shot flew into the back of the net. The Millers seemed to sit back a bit and a Adam Lallana cross just failed to find John in front of the net. But Drewe Broughton made sure he really did get his name on the scoreboard by getting the Millers third. Reuben Reid made an impressive run, getting past several Southampton defenders and slid the ball across to Broughton who tapped the ball into the back of the net.

Championship? You’re having a laff!
