Rotherham Reserves 2 v Bantam Reserves 1

Rotherham Reserves won their first game of the season this afternoon at Don Valley Stadium.

Both clubs put out strong sides and Rory Boulding should perhaps have opened the score for the visitors after a mistake by David Haggerty saw the ball fall to Mark Bower whose ball found Boulding only for the ball to go out for a corner. A few minutes later Steven Cann, in the Millers goal, brought of a good save from Luke Sharry. Drew Broughton could have opened the scoring but saw his shot deflected out for a corner. Jamie Yates also had a shot at goal that flashed just wide of the goal. Mark Burchill then laid the ball off to Micky Cummins whose shot went in the back of the net off the post. At the other end Cann made a finger tip save from Osborne before Burchill got the second Millers goal when he lobbed McLaughlin from outside the box. Both teams had more shots at goal before the Bantams pulled one back when Rory Boulding rounded Cann to put the ball into the back of the net ten minutes before half-time. Just before the end of the half, the Millers’ Andy Todd got round two defenders but seemed to trip up before he had time to shoot.

At the start of the second half, Cann just managed to stop the ball going over the line from Boulding and Taylforth headed just over the bar not long after. Again Boulding got free but saw Cann fingertip his shot round the post and five minutes later a wind assisted lob went just over the bar. Sharry and Luke Dean could also have done better with shots and Cann again had to smother a shot from Boulding before the end of the game
