GEOFF ELTRINGHAM from Tyne and Wear
Geoff played football at school and, after leaving, decided he still wanted to be involved in the game and thought refereeing was the best way to do that. He came through the ranks, being promoted to the National List of Referees two seasons ago.
Last season, Geoff was in charge of two games involving the Millers, showing red cards in each game. The first was in October at Accrington where the Millers came out three-two winners. Andy Parkinson opened the scoring for the home side in the first ten minutes but, on seventeen minutes, Kevin Long saw red for pulling back Adam Le Fondre in the penalty area. Alfie scored the penalty to make it one-all going into half-time. Four minutes into the second half, Jimmy Ryan put Stanley back in the lead but goals from Exodus Geohaghon and Ryan Cresswell in the final ten minutes gave the visitors all three points.
At Don Valley in March Barnet were the visitors. The game ended goalless but on the seventy-first minute Tom Newey saw red. The Millers had been awarded a free-kick and and Newey asked Izale McLeod three times to give him the ball before he took matters into his own hands and stepped towards him with his arms held high only for McLeod to go over like a sack of ‘taters. As the Referee went to talk to the linesman, the stunned Don Valley crowd looked on, as Newey was shown a red card. Mr Eltringham also showed yellow cards to Nick Fenton of the Millers and Barnet’s Joe Devera, Mark Hughes, McLeod and Mark Byrne.
This season Geoff has been in charge of twenty-seven games showing sixty yellow cards and four red cards
