Rotherham United travel to Lincolnshire on Tuesday for the next pre-season friendly to take on Stamford AFC at the PK Arena.
The Daniels (so called after Daniel Lambert who was allegedly the fattest man in English history and who died and is buried in the town) were established in 1896, joining the Northamptonshire League (later to become the United Counties League) in 1909, winning the title in the 1911/12 season.
They spent some time in the Peterborough and District League but rejoined the United Counties League in 1946 leaving again nine years later to join the Central Alliance and then the Midland League.
In 1972, once again, they moved back to the United Counties League winning the league in 1975/6, 1977/8, 1979/80, 1981/2, 1996/7 and 1997/8 before moving to the Midland Division of the Southern League (which was renamed the Eastern Division al year later). In 2003/4, although finishing in seventh place, due to league restructuring they got promoted but came straight back down but won the play-offs to go back up the following season.
After one season in the Southern League Premier Division they were transferred to the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League but were relegated at the end of that season to the Division One South League. Last season they finished in seventh place.
In June this year South Kesteven District Council gave planning permission for a new ground to be built which is hoped will be ready for the 2014/15 season.
Millers Manager, Steve Evans, had his first managerial experience with Stamford, starting in 1994 and leading them to the United Counties Football League Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern Football League. He left in 1998 to become manager of Boston.
Graham Drury is the present Manager of the Daniels and he has recently recruited Darren Young to act as an assistant to the management team and goalkeeping coach Richard Stainsby who will also act as back-up ‘keeper.
Steve Evans has said that he will be taking a full squad to the game and that some of the senior players as well as the younger lads will play.
Stamford have won four of their six pre-season friendlies so far.
