RUFC – Is Booing Right?

How should we, the fans, show our displeasure if not happy with our football club?

Wayne Rooney wasn`t at all impressed with the England fans who booed the team off during the World Cup.

So, if booing isn`t the way to show you aren`t impressed, what is? Voting with your feet by not attending games? But, if you do that, then, it`s quite possible that the club you`ve loved and supported since a child will eventually go under – and nobody wants to see that.

We know that, these days, football is a business, our own Chairman, Tony Stewart has said this often enough.

And, yes, football is a business, its part of the entertainment business.

And, therefore, it`s something that should provide entertainment to the people who go and watch.

That`s us, the fans.

If you went to see a film or play and it was poor then you`d probably walk out – that doesn`t seem to happen at football does it? People would rather show their anger by waiting until the end of the game and booing the players off.

And, yep, you pay your money so you should be able to have your say. But, does it really help them? Does the player think ‘they are booing me I`ll have to do better next week?` Or, does their confidence dip and dip until they can`t play for that team anymore?

But, in the past few years hasn`t booing got out of hand? It`s understandable, I suppose, booing something an opponent has done to one of your players, but to actually boo your own team? Isn`t that a bit pointless and, frankly a bit sad?

And there are players who get booed for things that happened years ago – Diego Maradona for instance, will never be allowed to forget his ‘hand of god` goal against England and, even in charity games has been known to be booed by English fans.

And, it`s fair to say, some players actually thrive on being booed! Take Cristiano Ronaldo for instance, booed for what he did to Wayne Rooney in a World Cup game – went on to help Manchester United win the title that year. David Beckham was the same, booed for getting sent off in the World Cup, every week, by both the opposing and his own fans, helped Manchester United to win the treble, having a great season.

I think we all agree that booing is part and parcel of the game now – it`s a harmless way to get rid of the anger we are feeling – but, whether it`s right or not, is a matter of opinion.
