In his first season at Millmoor, Kevin captained Rotherham United to promotion from Division Three when his excellent passing made him one of the best midfielders in the division.
He only netted one goal but it was a spectacular effort against Chester City from the halfway line. The following season he was the only ever present player in the squad as a second successive promotion was achieved. His skilful midfield play saw him spread passes around to great effect while he enjoyed a purple patch of scoring in four successive games in October.
But he found it difficult to find his best form in a struggling team in 2001/02 so he joined Reading on loan to regain his confidence. Kevin returned to Millmoor and regained his first team place before he moved to the Royals again, this time in a permanent move to give the Millers a handsome £200,000 profit after they had signed him on a free.
