Denis Coleman, the Rotherham United Chairman, has told The Advertiser he thinks the crowd figure for the Boxing Day game against Oldham was at least 300 to 400 out.

There is to be detailed checks carried out on the turnstyles to make sure crowd figures are accurate.

‘We had the turnstyles serviced only a few weeks ago but they are dated,` Mr Coleman said. ‘We believe the crowd figures showing up on the central computer are wrong and we are going to take another look at them.`

For the Boxing Day game the ground looked to be almost full to capacity, which is 8 200 and it was a surprise when the official attendance was given at 6 500.

‘There were spare seats in the railway end and we had 100 tickets left for the open end of Millmoor Lane, ‘ the chairman carried on, ‘And there are the season ticket holders who don`t turn up.

‘But we want to declare true and accurate crowd sizes. I must stress that the checks and balances are now in place to rule out any wrong doing and they will continue.`

Mr Coleman stresses that there is no question of human malpractice. The inaccurate figures are due to technical problems with the electronic clickers on the turnstyles.
