Rotherham United welcome Middlesbrough for their fourth league visit to the New York Stadium the last time being the final game of the 2018/19 season.

In that Sunday game Britt Assombalonga opened the scoring for the visitors from the penalty spot on twenty-eight minutes after he’d been fouled by Clark Robertson with John Obi Mikel giving Lewis Price in the Millers goal no chance less than ten minutes later to make it two-nil. Already relegated the week before all the Millers fans wanted was a goal to celebrate and with four minutes to go they got one after Mikel brought Kyle Vassell down in the box and up stepped Michael Smith to put the ball into the back of the net. In time added on a good ball in from Billy Jones was cleared by a ‘Boro defender before it could reach Ajayi which was followed by the only yellow of the game which went to Mikel for kicking the ball away.

In March 2016 it looked like the game would be goalless when up popped Lee Frecklington with two minutes to go to score the only goal of the game for the hosts. In the final minute of the game a foul by Greg Halford on Stewart Downing saw him get a second yellow and an early walk down the tunnel.

‘Boro’s first visit to the New York Stadium was in November 2014, a game which didn’t exactly go as the Millers planned when they found themselves two goals and one player down within the first thirty minutes. Patrick Bamford and Yanic Wildschut put the visitors two up by the twenty minutes mark and not long afterwards a poor challenge from Daniel Ayala saw Alex Revell get a boot in his face and after lengthy treatment had to be helped from the pitch. On came Jordan Bowery to take his place but three minutes later he and George Friend went for the same ball with Friend falling to the floor in apparent agony. Referee Mick Russell took notice of his linesman and the Millers striker got a red card – although this was later rescinded. The hosts put up a good fight in the second half but a Lee Tomlin goal three minutes from time gave the visitors a three-nil win. Paul Green and Jonson Clarke-Harris saw yellows that day.

The teams were both in the Old Division Three the time before that when they met at Millmoor with Middlesbrough winning four-one – Rotherham’s goal being scored by Colin Douglas. Archie Stevens and Brian Laws scored two each for the visitors.

The first time the sides met at Millmoor was in Division Two in September 1954 when goals from Ron Burke, Gladstone Guest and Ian Wilson gave the hosts a three-nil victory in front of just over seventeen thousand fans.

The game at the Riverside earlier this season was a three-nil victory for the Millers with Matt Crooks scoring just before half-time and second half goals from Michael Smith, from the penalty spot, and Ryan Giles.
