Rotherham United welcome the Potters of Stoke City for the next match at the New York Stadium which will be just City’s fourth visit here.
Boxing Day 2022 was the last time the two met on Rotherham soil which saw the Millers lose Ben Wiles on the half-hour mark after he was stretchered off. An own goal from Jordan Thompson gave the Millers the lead on the stroke of half-time with Tyrese Campbell getting an equaliser for the Potters just after the hour mark. Conor Washington put the hosts back in front ten minutes later but a Lee Peltier own goal on eighty minutes saw City get a point.
January 2021 saw Stoke on Rotherham soil, which was Paul Warne’s two hundredth game in charge of the Millers, when the game saw six goals. An unfortunate own goal from Angus MacDonald gave the visitors the lead just before the quarter of an hour mark but Matt Crooks equalised after Michael Smith got the better of Danny Batth and took the ball away from him. Six minutes into the second half Smith put the Millers in front with Batth equalising just after the hour mark. Rotherham went in front again when Crooks struck home from the edge of the box only for Nick Powell to make it three-three with fifteen minutes to go.
In the game in September 2018 the game was goalless at half-time but early in the second half Ashley Williams brought down Rotherham’s Ryan Williams in the box and up stepped Ryan Manning to convert the penalty. Three minutes later the Millers were two up after an inswinging corner found the head of Richard Wood who put it down for Richie Towell to poke home. But, arguably, Stoke finished the stronger and just before the hour mark Tom Ince pulled one back and in the final five minutes Bojan Krkic got down low to head in a Benik Afobe cross to give them a point to take back to Staffordshire.
Before that the last time Stoke played on Rotherham soil was at Millmoor in August 2004. Going in goalless at half-time Paul Shaw put the Millers in front on fifty-six minutes but an Ade Akinbiyi goal five minutes from time sent the Potters home with a point.
A Tuesday night in September 2003 was the last time the Millers beat the Stoke at Millmoor. A poor challenge from Paul Williams in the box on Martin Butler on the stroke of half-time saw referee Carl Boyeson award the hosts a penalty which Darren Byfield duly put past Ed de Goey in Stoke’s goal in front of the kop. Six minutes into the second half Martin Butler got the ball into the box for Paul Warne who was beaten to it by two Stoke players but Butler had followed the ball and won it back shooting into the net for his first goal in a Rotherham shirt. With a minute left of the game Butler scored his second Millers goal to give the hosts a three-nil win after some good work from Byfield.
October 2002 saw Stoke at Millmoor in League One which saw Richie Barker open the scoring for the Millers on fifteen minutes. Alan Lee scored on thirty-nine minutes to send the Millers in two up at half-time. Barker got his second eight minutes into the second half with a late Chris Swailes goal making it four-nil to the Millers.
Stoke last won at Millmoor in April 1993, in Division Two, with Mark Stein scoring both goals. City finished the season in top place with ninety-three points, the Millers twenty-eight points behind in eleventh.
The first time the pair met at Millmoor was in the Old Division Two in November 1919 when Stoke won three-one.
The league game on the first day of the season at the Bet365 Stadium saw the hosts go in front on just five minutes with a great volley from Ki-Jana Hoever which was followed by two goals in time added on from Andre Vidigal, Lee Peltier pulled one back for the Millers a minute into the second half but going down to ten men with just over twenty minutes to go did them no favours with Cafu getting a second yellow. Stoke got a fourth on the ninetieth minute from Jacob Brown.
