Rotherham United travel to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough for the next Championship game, the last time being in January 2021.

The game had been re-arranged due to the original game was postponed due to Covid-19. Just minutes before the break Matt Crooks opened the scoring for the Millers before ‘Boro ‘keeper Marcus Bettinelli felled Freddie Ladapo with Michael Smith putting the resulting penalty in the net. Ryan Giles, making his debut for the visitors just minutes before off the bench, made it three-nil in time added on.

Before that the pair met at ‘Boro’s ground in October 2018 when the Millers travelled to the team at the top of the Championship. Ryan Williams brought off a good save from Darren Randolph with the hosts piling on the pressure a bit and Rotherham soaking it up. The second half was much the same although the Millers put in many crosses and hit the post on occasions but in the end gained their first away point of the season.

November 2015 was time prior to that when the pair met in Middlesbrough which saw Stewart Downing, who was making his four hundredth league appearance of his career, strike the only goal of the game just after the quarter of an hour mark. The only yellow of the game went to the Millers’ Tom Thorpe.

The teams met at the Riverside almost seven months before that when goals from Lee Tomlin and Patrick Bamford in the second half gave the hosts all three points. Kari Arnason and Lee Frecklington saw yellow cards that day.

The last time Rotherham won Middlesbrough at their old ground Ayresome Park was in March 1965. The teams were in the Old Division Two and the Millers came away with a five-three win. Albert Bennett got a hat-trick that afternoon with the other two goals being scored by Robin Hardy and Brian Tiler. Rotherham finished that season in fourteenth place with ‘Boro finishing three places below.

The first time the sides met in Middlesbrough was in January 1955. The hosts won the game five-one with the Millers goal coming from Gladstone Guest.
