Rotherham United welcome Sunderland for their third league visit to the New York Stadium.

The Black Cats were last in town in February 2023 which saw their defence a little wanting on nineteen minutes when Ollie Rathbone was allowed to run unstopped into the box sending a low ball into the corner of the net to give the Millers the lead. And on fifty-six minutes that was doubled when Shane Ferguson made it two-nil with a shot that went in off the post. The deficit was halved just after the hour mark when Joe Gelhardt headed in for the visitors but the Millers held on for the three much needed points.

October 2021 also saw Sunderland on Rotherham soil with Michael Smith putting the hosts in front on ten minutes. Ross Stewart got an equaliser for the Black Cats fourteen minutes later but Freddie Ladapo regained the Millers lead before half-time with Michael Ihiekwe making it three-one in the second half. Aiden McGeady saw red for the visitors after getting a second yellow for a lunge on Wes Harding with the Millers making it five-one further goals coming from Smith and Ihiekwe.

The pair last met in the league at Millmoor in October 2004. The only goal of the game came just after the hour mark when, after a period of pressure, Dean Whitehead scored the only goal of the game which went the visitors way. In the opening ten minutes of the game Rotherham had a few chances which Sunderland managed to snuff out but it was Millers’ ‘keeper Mike Pollitt who did well to stop Marcus Stewart opening the scoring. Visiting ‘keeper Thomas Myhre was in action early in the second half keeping out Shaun Barker and Martin McIntosh while Pollitt again had to be on his toes to keep out Julio Arca before the goal.

December 2003 saw a League One game between the two at Millmoor also end in a Sunderland win with Marcus Stewart heading home after half-an-hour followed by another from the spot, after Guy Branston had tripped Tommy Smith in the area, four minutes before half-time.

The Millers have only beaten Sunderland twice in the league, both ties at Millmoor. The first time was in March 1960 when Roy Lambert got the only goal of the game with the second time being in

1962, which was a four-two score line, with the host’s goals coming from John Bennett (2), Ken Houghton and Alan Kirkman.

Sunderland have played here before in a pre-season friendly in 2016. The actual game was a bit overlooked by the fact that all the cameramen in the stadium were pointing at Sunderland manager David Moyes who had signed a deal that morning. The visitors went in front with a goal from Fabio Borini which squirmed under the body of Millers’ ‘keeper Lee Camp with Jerry Yates equalising for the hosts in the second half. With five minutes to go French International Charles N’Zogbia shot from eighteen yards out and saw it go into the net to give Sunderland the pre-season win.

The game at the Stadium of Light in August saw the Millers go in front on twenty minutes thanks to a goal from Hakeem Odoffin but a goal two minutes later from Jude Bellingham plus another seven minutes into the second half gave the Black Cats all three points.
