Head-to-Head - Millers Away At Shrewsbury

Rotherham United find themselves back at the Greenhous Meadow for this season’s Boxing Day game where they take on Shrewsbury Town.

The last time the Millers went to the Greenhous Meadow in the league was in February 2018 when a minute before the interval Richard Wood was in the right place at the right time from a corner to score the only goal of the game to give the visitors their thirteenth game without defeat.

At the end of that season the pair met again at Wembley in the League One Play-Off Final which was a two-one win for the Millers. Richard Wood opened the scoring on thirty-two minutes with Alex Rodman getting an equaliser thirteen minutes into the second half. The tie went to extra time when Woody’s ‘magic hat’ was there again to send Rotherham back into the Championship.

In January 2014 the Millers were on the better side of a three-nil on their visit to Shrewsbury. Tom Hitchcock opened the scoring on ten minutes with Ben Pringle adding the second eight minutes later. And on the twenty-first minute the scoring was done and dusted when James Tavernier made it three-nil. Mark Bradley, Rob Milsom and Hitchcock were booked for the visitors with Joe Jacobson, Tamika Mkandawire and Conor Goldson seeing yellow for Shrewsbury.

The time before when the Millers met the Shrews at their home ground was in April 2012 when both were in League Two. The Millers started well with Ryan Cresswell opening the scoring for the visitors on just two minutes. On the stroke of half-time Terry Gornell equalised for the hosts and Aaron Wildig put them in the lead three minutes into the second half. Gornell made sure on the sixty-seventh minute getting his second and the Shrews third.

In April 1999 Rotherham won at the Shrews when they played at Gay Meadow. Leo Fortune-West scored on eight minutes but Lee Steele equalised for the home side five minutes later. Paul Warne put the Millers back in front on the sixty-seventh minute only for Stephen Jagielka equalising again. In the final minutes of the game Phil Whelan, on loan from Oxford, scored the winner for the visitors.

This will be the third time the Millers and Shrews have met this season – the game at the New York Stadium in September was goalless and in August the Millers made the Tuesday night trip to the Greenhous Meadow in the EFL Cup where goals from Matt Crooks, Kyle Vassell, Freddie Ladapo and Richard Wood gave Rotherham a four-nil win.
