Charity Game at Millmoor

A John Breckin all stars side took on Mel Sterland all stars at Millmoor yesterday to help give little Elysha Robertson a better way of life, after the youngster has an illness, so rare, it has yet to get a name.

A fine crowd turned up yesterday morning for the game – which had all the thrills and spills of a Premiership game (!) Kevin Pressman in the blue and white`s goal pulled off some good saves while Mark Robins bagged himself a hat trick and man of the match.

Concerns for ex Millers favourite, Ronnie Moore, as he went down, with what the sponge men, Paul and Barry Chuckle, said was a ‘twisted sock` were unfounded and when referee Howard Webb tried to send off the Chuckles, Barry relieved him of his red card and Paul threw a bucket of water over him (come on, we`ve all wanted to do this to a ref!)

Some of the stars who turned out included Nigel Clough, Mark Robins, Gerry Forrest, Rich Finney, Paul Stancliffe, Simon Tracey (who all looked like they could still turn out and play twenty minutes or so professionally),Keith Edwards, David Hirst, Tony Cunningham, Terry Curran (who, frankly didn`t!) but all who were involved seemed to be enjoying themselves. Even Elysha`s Dad and ex Millmoor announcer Richard Lee got a game. Tony Currie, who didn`t play, obliged anyone who asked for autographs as did the Chuckles. Best goal of the game was by young master Hirst, who, I think, subbed his dad! – though, Mark Robins` goals were pretty special too!

In the second half the sponge men became grounds men and tried to see to the divots on the pitch – while the game was still going on; insisted on stopping the game for a photo with Mark Robins and later on brought John Breckin ON the pitch on the stretcher which Gerry Forrest then got on and was promptly dropped.

All good clean fun and all for a good cause. Oh, the score? Apparently it was five-five, but, to be honest, no one was really counting!
